Why Does Perfume Cost More per Millilitre When You Buy a Decant?
Share
Imagine your favourite perfume costs €200 for a 100 ml bottle.
That works out at €2 per millilitre. So why doesn't a 5 ml decant necessarily cost exactly €10?
It's a fair question. Let's break it down.
You're Buying More Than Just 5 ml of Perfume
When you buy a full-size bottle, you're getting a finished product straight from the manufacturer.
When you choose a decant, there's a little more work involved in getting those few millilitres ready for you.

So, what goes into the price of a perfume decant?
The original perfume. First, the shop purchases a full-size bottle of the genuine fragrance.
A separate atomiser. Every decant needs its own suitable container to keep the perfume safe and make it easy to use.
Careful decanting. The fragrance needs to be transferred into a smaller bottle hygienically and carefully, with as little waste as possible.
Packaging. Each order needs to be packed securely to protect it during delivery.
Running the shop. Processing orders, supplies, website costs, payment fees, taxes and other business expenses are all part of the final price.
That's why the price of a 5 ml decant isn't simply the price of a 100 ml bottle divided by twenty.
So Why Choose a Perfume Decant?
Because not every fragrance in your life needs its own 100 ml bottle.
Maybe you've discovered a new niche perfume, but you're not sure how it will develop on your skin.
Maybe you want one fragrance for work, another for date nights, and a third for those evenings when you just feel like treating yourself.
Or perhaps you simply love variety and don't want to wear the same perfume every day for years.
Decants give you the freedom to explore different fragrances without having to commit to a full-size bottle every time.
A Smaller Bottle Doesn't Mean Less Enjoyment
To me, perfume decants aren't about not being able to afford a full-size bottle.
They're about having the freedom to choose.
You can invest in a full-size bottle when you've found a fragrance you truly love. Or you can build your own little perfume wardrobe, with different scents for different moments in your life.
You don't need 100 ml of every fragrance to enjoy wearing it.
That's exactly why I created Parfum Guide — a space where you can discover new fragrances, try something different and choose the scent that feels right for you today.
